The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest dog breed in the world — a commanding, rough-coated sighthound from Ireland with a history stretching back over 2,000 years. Ancient Roman records from 391 AD describe gifts of Irish Wolfhounds to Roman consuls as prized curiosities, and the breed was so valued in medieval Ireland that only kings and nobles were permitted to own them, with the number allowed determined by rank. Bred to hunt wolves and Irish elk — a now-extinct giant deer that stood over six feet at the shoulder — the Irish Wolfhound was so effective that it hunted both species to extinction in Ireland. By the 19th century the breed itself had nearly vanished, saved largely through the efforts of British Army Captain George Graham, who spent decades rebuilding the breed from the few remaining dogs. Despite its imposing size, the Irish Wolfhound is famously gentle, calm, and affectionate — a true gentle giant.
